Reducing Costs with Cleaner Air

Keeping students, staff, and visitors safe with the power of UV disinfection: this case study looks at how Airocide Systems implemented UV-C technology in HVAC systems for schools to improve indoor air quality and reduce operating costs.

Jefferson County Schools

Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado is a prominent school district known for its commitment to academic excellence, innovative programs, and a supportive learning environment, providing students with diverse opportunities for growth and success. The district has over 80,000 students and 5,000 staff members that rely on clean air to maintain a productive learning environment.

Project

Jeffco Schools adopted UV-C in their HVAC systems, aiming to improve indoor air quality and recycle air throughout their facilities safely without the increased transmission of pathogens. UV-C lamps were installed within the air handling units (AHUs), strategically targeting the cooling coils and drain pans which are typically prone to biofilm growth.

Results

The Airocide Systems Fighter Flex System was installed to disinfect the air passing through the school's HVAC systems and everything inside the units. The UV-C lamps inactivate mold, bacteria, fungi, and viruses which improves IAQ and helps to prevent illness from spreading—a large concern for classrooms during cold and flu season. The Fighter Flex also increases energy efficiency due to eliminating biofilm growth that causes higher energy consumption when airflow becomes blocked.
